When making a potting mix for Epicactus, I like to create a free-draining mix that is high in organic matter. I like to use a mix of 1/3 coarse perlite, 1/3 premium orchid mix and 1/3 premium potting mix.
In a drier climate, you might like to increase the potting mix component and in a more humid environment you might increase the orchid bark and perlite. Experiment and see what works best for you! This combination for me creates an ideal environment for Epicactus to thrive in, providing the best balance of moisture and aeration. And yes .. it's OK to throw in some coffee grounds too .. even if they are mouldy!
